A mondegreen is a word or phrase which when spoken is misheard as another word or phrase – often with hilarious results. The examples of mondegreens collected in this book, from the small child reciting the Lord’s Prayer – ‘Our Father, which art in Heaven, how did you know my name?’ – to the music lover mishearing Simon and Garfunkel’s line ‘Are you going to Scarborough Fair?’ as ‘Are you going to starve an old friend?’, are bound to entertain and amuse, and sometimes provoke a full-blown guffaw.
